Gold rips 3.54% while the peso stays pinned 4 centavos from its ceiling
Good morning!
Gold rips and the dollar won't follow
Gold jumped 3.54% to 4,521 overnight, more than double its normal daily range and the biggest move on my screens. And it isn't alone: WTI added 1.52% to 92.39, still riding the crude spike Ormuz set off on Tuesday.
The telling part is what the greenback does with all of it: nothing. The DXY sits at 99.03 and the long end eased 3bp to 4.77%. When the metal runs and yields give way at once, this reads as an inflation hedge against the energy shock rather than panic; the VIX at 15.15 says calm.
The peso frozen 4 centavos from its ceiling
USD/MXN opens at 17.0004, barely moving, just 4 centavos below the 10-day resistance at 17.0435. It's the third day the currency has hugged that upper edge without committing to a break.
Straight talk: if you're carrying a short hedge, that ceiling is your line. Absent a close above it, the range I drew yesterday still governs, 16.88 below and 17.04 above.
Yesterday I said I'd flip to the dollar only on a close above 17.07 with the 10-year back over 4.80%. Rates did the opposite: yields fell rather than rose. Neither trigger fired, so I hold the fence, framed as a range call.
The rate-hike bet that won't cool
Here's what nags me: the market keeps flirting with a Fed hike in September, fed by expensive oil and the hawkish lean Warsh showed last week. With crude climbing, that story stays warm, and a dollar hungry for yield is the main threat to the premium the Mexican currency pays today.
Positioning leans the other way: Chicago speculators were net long the peso by 82,382 contracts as of August 25, adding nearly 3,000 on the week. That's stacked-up conviction with a multi-day lag, not this morning's flow, but it shows where consensus stands.
One concession: gold's move at this magnitude I can't pin on a single clean catalyst, and that forces me to handle the day with tongs.
What's ahead
The calendar is loaded but out in front: Mexican inflation on the 9th, the ECB on the 10th, and US CPI on the 11th. None is today, so crude, gold and how the peso resolves that 17.04 edge drive the session.
Risk On climbs from 53 to 57 into CONSTRUCTIVE territory: the VIX in calm range and global appetite, with Bitcoin at 78,353, do the pushing, while the currency glued to its ceiling and a compressed rate gap subtract. My stance stays neutral with an explicit range; the day 17.04 gives way on the upside with long rates turning, I switch the chip.
— See you tomorrow for Friday's view.
The Risk On index sums up global risk appetite — with a Mexico focus — in a single 0–100 number. Depending on where it lands, the day falls into one of these four bands:
The Risk On index is a proprietary indicator, designed and maintained by Mauricio Mercenario. It is a market-reading tool, not investment advice.
Market return over the trading days after publication. For USD/MXN, negative = the peso appreciated. Automatic evaluation — not investment advice.
